Tatal lui Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), o fetita de 14 ani, a fost impuscat mortal de lasul Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Aceasta este hoatarata sa il aduca pe ucigas in fata justitiei si ii cere ajutorul unui soldat U.S. Marshal mereu beat si vesel, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Cei doi trebuie sa il gaseasca pe Tom Chaney inaintea lui LeBoeuf (Matt Damon), un Texas Ranger care vrea sa il duca pe Chaney inapoi in Texas si sa il judece pentru o alta crima.
